"Screaming Eagle Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant...
Kip gave us the lowdown on the new Screaming Eagles H-D SYN3 synthetic oil that should be available at the dealership by the time you read this article. This new oil has been designed to run in all H-D Twin Cam and Evo engines. Kip said he has been using Mobile 1 synthetic oil in his bike for years, but was going to switch to H-D SYN3 as soon as it came in and not just because they are the Harley dealer. He said that the new H-D oil actually does triple duty as it can be run in the engine, primary and transmission of your Evo or Twin. So now you can have the oil changed with 5 quarts in the engine and keep a spare quart in your saddlebag in case you need to top off any of the other fluid levels. He said you can run your bike 5,000 miles before you need to change the engine oil and filter. There was a question about mixing oils and Kip told us that it is safe to add other motor oils like H-D 20W50 to the synthetic oil and it will not harm the engine. The H-D synthetic manual does state that "mixing the synthetic lubricant with other oils will reduce or dilute the superior engine protection of the synthetic lubricants; and should only be done if absolutely necessary". Kip also mentioned that you should not mix a can of "oil additive" to the Screaming Eagles Synthetic oil as it already contains the correct amount of additives to last between changes and you may actually upset the balance that it already has. This may just cause other problems. You can start using Screaming Eagles synthetic at any time you change the oil in the engine, transmission or chaincase (primary). It has been approved for use in all stages of engine life, including the first service interval. You can even use it in the break-in stage of your bike. The H-D synthetic oil will not affect your normal warranty.
Kip mentioned that some of the benefits of the new oil are superior performance under high heat conditions like riding down mainstreet in Sturgis at 5 mph when it's 100 degrees outside or riding short trips in the cold weather that wouldn't normally get your bike up to full operating temperatures. According to the manufacturer, this synthetic oil contains additives and inhibitors like:
Metal Detergents - neutralize acids and reduce corrosion.
Antioxidants - resist and reduce oil thickening
Anti-Wear Agents - well duh
Viscosity Modifiers - stabilize oil thickness at hotter temps
Pour Depressants - ensure proper flow in colder temps (sorry, not an anti-depressant to sticker shock of buying a new Harley)
Rust Inhibitors - need I say more
Anti-Foams - reduce foaming and keeps rabid animals at bay!
Kip told us that he had to pass a course to be certified to answer questions about the new synthetic oil. If they would have called us, we would have told them that Kip was already "certifiable"! Guess this makes him “slippery too” !
As for his public speaking, I think we should run Kip as our next candidate for City Commission. Since commissioner Schwellenbach rides a Harley and is already a member of CSDHOG we may really have some pull! Let's use the new synthetic oil to grease the wheels!
